Feature Issue of Applied Optics

Optical Fiber Sensors

Submission Opens: 1 October 2022

Submission Deadline: 15 December 2022

Applied Optics welcomes submissions to a feature issue on “Optical Fiber Sensors” in conjunction with the 27th International Conference on Optical Fiber Sensors, which will take place on 29 August -2 September 2022 in Alexandria, Virginia, United States. It will highlight, in particular, work on distributed fiber optic sensors, biomedical optical fiber sensors, and nanosensors. Whereas meeting participants are particularly encouraged to submit their work, the feature issue is open to all contributions in related areas.

Optical fiber sensors have been an active area of research since the early demonstrations of low loss optical fiber in the late 1960s. Since then, the research field has grown dramatically and now covers application areas including defense, security and environmental monitoring, biomedical sensors, smart structures, civil engineering, and navigation. Sensing technologies require a broad range of disciplines including nanosensors, spectroscopy, interferometry, distributed sensing, photonic crystal fibers, computational techniques, and quantum photonic sensing.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Physical, mechanical, and electromagnetic sensors
    (including acoustic sensors)
  • Chemical, environmental, biological, and medical sensors, and biophotonics
  • Interferometric, polarimetric, and laser-based sensors (including gyroscopes and resonators)
  • Micro- and nano-structured fiber sensors (including photonic crystal fiber and grating-based sensors)
  • Distributed and multiplexed sensing and sensor networking
  • Other technologies (including imaging-related, spectroscopic, and those based on smartphone platforms)
  • Environmental, security, defense, and industrial applications; technology commercialization and standardization
  • Smart structures (including structural health monitoring
    and photonics in additive manufacturing)
  • New elements (fibers, devices, and subsystems), effects (e.g., plasmonics), technologies
(including nanophotonics), and materials (e.g., meta- and structured materials, etc.) for photonic sensing
  • Integrated photonics, cavity optomechanics, and quantum sensing techniques, precision metrology, frequency combs

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal. The standard Applied Optics Article Publication Charges will apply to all published articles. To be eligible for publication, an expanded conference paper needs to add value to the original conference proceedings and the conference paper number must be included in the cover letter at submission. Please see Optica Publishing Group’s guidelines on expanded conference papers for details.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Applied Optics and submit through our electronic submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue on Optical Fiber Sensors.
