FOSA title: Commercial Applications of Fiber Optic Sensing: A Paradigm Shift for Smart Cities & Communities

Abstract: A smart city or community employs sensors, obtains data, and makes decisions to achieve otherwise prohibitive efficiency, economic growth, quality of life, and equity. Fiber optics, associated cables, and conduits are becoming ubiquitous infrastructure in cities & communities. By leveraging that ubiquity, fiber optic sensing can enable a variety of “multi-use” commercial applications for smart cities & communities. In turn the benefits of that infrastructure investment can be maximized. This presentation will demonstrate how fiber optic sensing is a paradigm shift for smart cities & communities. Existing commercial applications of, for example, distributed acoustic, temperature, and strain sensing for surface transportation, resilience, public safety, and environmental & social governance will be discussed.

Speaker bio: Presented by Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA) Smart Cities Committee Chairman Dr. Giovanni Milione.
